College of the Desert Students Assisted in Stabilizing Trauma Patient
Traditional “Nurse Pinning” Ceremony at McCallum Theatre on December 16
(December 5, 2022 – Palm Springs, CA) – In addition to his full-time job in High Risk Case Management at Desert Oasis Healthcare (DOHC), Alex Marquez BSN RN is also a clinical instructor for the Nursing Program at College of the Desert (COD) in Palm Desert.
As a part of their final semester at COD, students rotated through Critical Care at Desert Regional Medical Center (DRMC), as well as the Immediate Care Clinics at DOHC in Palm Springs and Indio, from August 29 through December 1. These rotations train student nurses to care for patients with “acute alterations” in health – which means they are assigned the sickest patients at DRMC and asked to apply clinical judgment and critical thinking during 12-hour shifts at DOHC Immediate Care.

“Our students collaborated with the DOHC Immediate Care nurses, physicians, and support staff to make their best clinical decisions for the most favorable outcomes for our patients,” says Marquez. “During their final day of ‘clinicals’, two of the students assigned to the Emergency Room at DRMC had the opportunity to assist in stabilizing a patient brought in by helicopter under a trauma code. It was a proud moment for all.”
The Department of Health Sciences at College of the Desert offers associate degrees in Registered Nursing (RN) and Vocational Nursing (VN) as well as certificates for Vocational Nursing, Nurse Assistant (NA), and Home Health Aide (HHA.)
