Coachella Valley Heart Walk 2019 - DOHC

Nearly 300 Desert Oasis employees joined 2019 Coachella Valley Heart Walk as local “Life is Why” sponsor

Meanwhile, key drivers of the partnership attended AHA Scientific Sessions 2019 conference in Philadelphia.

(November 19, 2019 – Palm Springs, CA)
Desert Oasis Healthcare (DOHC) has joined with the American Heart Association (AHA) to raise awareness of heart disease as the #1 killer of men and women in the U.S. and right here in the Coachella Valley and the high-desert communities of the greater Morongo Basin that DOHC serves. That’s why DOHC and the AHA are working hard to provide community members with education and other resources to improve their heart health.

However, one of the key members of the “Life is Why” partnership for DOHC was unable to be at the Heart Walk on Saturday, November 16 because she was attending the AHA Scientific Sessions 2019 conference in Philadelphia, held November 16-18. “I was so sorry to miss the Heart Walk this year but couldn’t pass by this opportunity to connect with educators, clinicians, and worldwide leaders in the field of cardiology,” said Teresa Hodgkins, PharmD and VP of Clinical Quality Initiatives for Desert Oasis Healthcare. “Nearly half of all U.S. adults have high blood pressure and we have already made great progress in helping lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels with free tools and resources like the ‘Check. Change. Control.’ program. Our commitment is to helping our members and others in the community to live longer, healthier lives.”

Meanwhile at the 2019 Coachella Valley Heart Walk, DOHC staff were taking blood pressure readings, body mass index (BMI) measures, blood glucose screenings, and sharing information about smoking cessation and much more … just as they do throughout the year at health fairs, employer groups, and other community events.

The collective hard work by Desert Oasis Healthcare employees in helping people lower their blood pressure and cholesterol resulted in presentation of three awards: 2019 Silver Workplace Health Achievement Award, 2019 Gold Level for Check. Change. Control of Cholesterol for the second consecutive year and the 2019 Gold Level for Target Blood Pressure for the third consecutive year.

Checking in from the conference in Philadelphia, Dr. Hodgkins said, “It’s never too late to make better health choices. We know that even small changes can make a big difference in living a healthier life. We’re proud to be a part of helping that happen for our patients, our members, and the community at large. Quite simply … ‘Life is Why!’”
