New Clinic for Post-Stroke Patients

DOHC urges stroke prevention behaviors

(May 1, 2023 – Palm Springs, CA)
– As National Stroke Awareness Month begins in May, Desert Oasis Healthcare (DOHC) announces its new Stroke Clinic as an expansion of its care team services for post-stroke patients.

A stroke is a medical condition where poor blood flow to the brain results in cell death. The first main type of stroke is ischemic, which occurs due to a lack of blood flow. The second is hemorrhagic stroke, which occurs due to bleeding. Both types of stroke cause parts of the brain to stop functioning properly. “Every 40 seconds another American has a stroke, with someone in the U.S. dying of stroke every four minutes,” said Lindsey Valenzuela, PharmD and Associate VP of Population Health Integration at DOHC. “This new clinic aims to provide optimal care to DOHC patients with a history of either ischemic attacks or hemorrhagic stroke.”

While this new Stroke Clinic focuses on helping post-stroke patients recover, DOHC encourages everyone to practice five stroke-prevention behaviors:

  1. Lower your blood pressure. High blood pressure is a leading cause of stroke.
  2. Stop smoking. The nicotine in tobacco raises blood pressure while the carbon monoxide in smoke lowers the amount of oxygen your blood can carry.
  3. Reduce your alcohol intake. Alcohol not only raises your blood pressure but also your triglycerides, which can result in an unhealthy condition called metabolic syndrome.
  4. Exercise. This can help you to lower risks of obesity, cholesterol, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
  5. Eat healthy. Consume more fruits and vegetables and cut down on foods high in saturated fats and salt, as they can clog your arteries.
